The political speech is a powerful tool for shaping thought, for inspiring action, sometimes for inviting ridicule and derision, or for motivating a nation to reach for the highest goals possible. 

 

A great example of the power of a political speech is found in the 1968 impromptu speech delivered by Robert Kennedy when he announced that Martin Luther King, Jr, had been killed. Riots took place all over the country, but there was no riot in Indianapolis. The words of Robert Kennedy had the power to bring comfort, reason, and a measured response to a shockingly horrible incident.

 

Speech Watch is a site where people who love speeches, people who recognize the power of speeches can come to read transcripts, and can react to political speeches with their own written commentary. Often, the content of a speech is not immediately apparent. It is up to the listeners to internalize, analyze, and interpret the content and impact of the speeches that are shaping our lives.
